Belgium’s Vital Candidacy for UN Security Council 2019/2020   ‘Human Rights’

As an original founders of the United Nations, in 1945  Belgium signed the UN Charter along with 50 other countries.  And since then it has been actively engaged in contributing to Peace and Security in Europe and in the World.     

Belgium is at the forefront in the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes like genocide or war crimes. As part of its active Human Rights policy, Belgium takes the lead on issues such as the abolition of the death penalty, the fight against racial discrimination and the promotion of equal rights for LGBT’s.  2016 © MFA of Belgium

Belgium’s Candidacy for the UN Security Council: UN Peacekeeping

As an original founders of the United Nations, in 1945 Belgium signed the UN Charter along with 50 other countries.  And since then it has been actively engaged in contributing to Peace and Security in Europe and in the World. Its role has been, not limited, but also covers the critical areas of Conflict Management, Mediation and Peacebuilding within the UN.

Only in 2015  Belgium has contributed $ 85 million to UN Peacekeeping operations. And it had participated in 71 UN Peacekeeping missions deployed since 1948.

A Leadership to reckon……and the Land that will represent European Ideals

  • Belgium ranked the 5th largest  supplier to the United Nations systems in 2015. The first largest contributor was the United States.   (p. 73)
  • In addition, Belgium stood as the 3rd largest  supplier for the UN Health procurement sector in 2015 followed by France and the Netherlands.   ( p.41)

Belgium’s Candidacy for the United Nations Security Council 2019-2020

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders launched today in New York, in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and of the Permanent Representatives to the UN, the Belgian campaign for a seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2019-2020 period.  The motto proclaims:

                                                 “Fostering Consensus, Acting for Peace”

Foreign Minister Didier Reynders affirmed that Belgium will fully commit to the prevention of conflicts, their resolution and the search for a sustainable peace, as well as the prevention and the fight against terrorism, all the while continuing to promote Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Sustainable Development.   July 12, 2016 © MFA of Belgium
