Philip Hammond has unveiled a package ( on October 1, 2016)  of support which includes £220 million for the life science and university sectors to help technology breakthroughs translate into commercial success, as well as action to ensure disruptive businesses thrive in the UK.  October 1, 2016 © UK Gov

The package includes:

  • £100 million of funding to extend and enhance the Biomedical Catalyst, supporting innovative UK life science companies to translate cutting-edge medical technologies into commercial success
  • £120 million to incentivise university collaboration in tech transfer and in engaging with business, helping transform research at universities and institutions into viable business ventures

Royal Danish Navy in Standing NATO Maritime Group-2

The Royal Danish Naval vessel Absalon has been deployed to Standing NATO Maritime Group 2  on September 12  to fortify the alliance in Maritime Security and counter-terrorism.                                                     The mighty ship…….seemingly serene……. is equipped with Lynx helicopter and Special Forces with the high reputation for accuracy and agile act when it enters into Operations.

In its recent deployment to Mediterranean Sea as a part of Standing NATO Maritime Group-2, its tasks among others will include:

  • Support for NATO’s Operation Active Endeavour
  • Participation in the exercise Joint Warrior of the coast of Scotland as well as continuous co-training with the other ships in SNMG 2 to increase the maritime operational cooperability in the Alliance
  • Gathering and providing information/ intelligence to NATO’s maritime situational awareness in the Mediterranean Sea
  • To establish NATO-presence and being part of routine Diplomatic visits.  Described by the Denmark’s mission to NATO. September 28 2016

Royal Danish Navy in NATO Maritime Security-1

Since August 2010 the Royal Danish Navy has been vital part of  NATO Operation Oceans Shield.  Its participation has been by troops, military aircraft and vessels including:

  • Frigate Iver Huitfeldt with the required crew and helicopter from October to December 2013
  • Support Ship Esbern Snare Iver with the crew from June to December 2014
  • Surveillance aircraft of the type Challenger from September to November 2014 

Earlier this month on September 12, Danish Vessel HDMS Absalon has rejoined the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 in the Mediterranean Sea. This is not the first time that the support Ship Absalon has been deployed for the NATO Operation–the Vessel has been also before part of NATO Oceans Shield in 2010.

Finland and the United States advancing Partnership in Crisis Management and Defence

MFA of Finalnd Protected by Copy-Right Law

President of the Republic of Finland  and Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discuss Finland’s participation in crisis management and defence cooperation between Finland and the United States. Announced by the MFA of Finland on September 26,2016 

Finland will continue its active participation in international crisis management. It currently has roughly 500 soldiers taking part in 13 military crisis management operations and around 100 experts involved in 20 civilian crisis management operations.   

Finland ‘s  largest contribution is in the UNIFIL operation in Lebanon, where participation has been strengthened and extended as part of Finland’s response to the request for aid and assistance submitted by France following the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015.

The meeting also discussed defence cooperation between Finland and the United States, where a statement of intent for defence cooperation is under preparation between the two countries’ respective defence ministries.  Sweden and the United States signed a similar statement of intent in June 2016.                                                                                                                                                                                               The President and the Ministerial Committee also addressed the serious concerns about the humanitarian situation in Aleppo. © MFA of Finland, September 26, 2016

U.S-European Armed-Forces in Exercise Northern Challenge 16

Northern Challenge 16 is under way in Keflavik, Iceland.                                                                                                    The Exercise is a multinational counter explosive device in NATO’s counter-terrorism programme and hosted by Iceland.

The U.S Air Force Europe and the 52nd EOD ( Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Airmen have been holding a crucial role for executing this multinational exercise along with Iceland as the host country. 

Announced by the U.S Air Base in Germany, the  52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs:  “The Exercise is to bring U.S and European counterparts from allied and partner nations to become familiar with each other’s Military procedures and achieve greater interoperability in combating terrorism.”

The participating Armed-Forces are from NATO allies,  Partnership for Peace,  including:  Iceland, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Norway, Belgium, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
